South Africa: Shoprite to raise $1 bln for expansion

South African supermarket chain Shoprite Holdings said it will raise up to $1 billion by issuing new shares and convertible bonds to strenghten its balance sheet and help fund potential acquisitions.
Shoprite, which has been ramping up operations in African countries beyond its home market, said in a statement it plans to issue up to 27.2 million new shares, equal to about 5 percent of its current shares.

The East African Community will on 30 March 2012 officially launch the Medicines Registration Harmonization (EAC-MRH) Project at the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge and Golf Club in Arusha, Tanzania.
The EAC-MRH Project aims to improve public health by increasing rapid access to good quality, safe and effective medicines through reductions in the time taken to register essential medicines for the treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
